Gold to Dawson at German Cup pool champs

GISBORNE’s Chris Dawson returns from his biggest international experience with a gold medal and experience that should pave the way to more success.
Dawson, 18, was a member of the New Zealand team who competed at the German Cup pool championship in Warendorf this week.
The team also included former Gisborne man Glenn Anderson, now competing for New Plymouth Old Boys.
Dawson, one of the youngest competitors at the champs, combined with Steve Kent (Titahi Bay), Gold Coast-based Andy McMillan (St Clair) and Anderson to win the 200 metres obstacle relay.
His best individual placing was eighth in the 200m with obstacles won by Kent, with Anderson third.
Dawson was 38th in the 100m manikin tow, 23rd in the 100m rescue medley, 37th in the 100m manikin carry and 24th in the 200m super lifesaver.
His same gold medal-winning team were fifth in the 200m medley relay
Kent and Samantha Lee (Lyall Bay) were the stars of the eight-strong Kiwi contingent.
Lee’s standout effort included gold in the 100m rescue medley — her time of 1 minute 12.62 seconds just 0.02 off the world record and 1.75secs under Georgina Toomey’s New Zealand record set in 2006.
Kent picked up medals of every colour over the two days of competition and broke national records.
The German Cup is second only to the world champs.
