Champions of the oche

GIMME five. Turanga RSA racked up their fifth consecutive A-grade darts title in another memorable year of club competition recognised at Gisborne Club Darts Association’s annual prizegiving.
The best teams and individuals, and those who contributed to the success of the 27-week league, were highlighted at a themed function hosted by 2NZEF.
The highlights were many over 27 weeks of competition involving 18 teams.
Tomo’s 3 marched through the round one grading. They racked up 17 wins from 17 games but had to settle for runners-up honours behind Turanga RSA in the title-deciding round two.
It was a victorious season for 2NZEF, with their “Z” team winning the B grade and their “3” team the C grade.
A-graders Hospital Meadow Fresh marked only their second season in club darts with the Ngerengere Shield for best all-round team.
Kino White (Cossy Gals) had a night to remember, winning awards for the most improved lady player, most tons overall by a lady and most tons by a C-grade lady.
Tyson Eyles (Tomo’s 3) won most improved man.
Gisborne club darts vice-president Thomas Irwin was the inaugural winner of the “most valued person” trophy donated by Stu Leach — a former Gisborne player and national champion now living in Australia, where he coaches junior players.
Players got into the spirit of the night’s theme — come as something starting with the letter D — with costumes ranging from a drag queen to a dark angel.
