Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully says the stoush between the IRB and New Zealand Rugby Union over the cost of the tournament and the All Blacks' future involvement was "unfortunate'' but would not take sides.
Asked if there was a possibility New Zealand's position in the tournament was in jeopardy, Mr McCully said New Zealand's role in rugby was well established.
"I'm disappointed to see the question of New Zealand's future involvement being discussed in a rather negative way.''
Mr McCully's comments follow claims by NZ Rugby Union boss Steve Tew that the $13.2 million cost to the NZRU could jeopardise the All Blacks' place at the 2015 World Cup. IRB chief executive Mike Miller responded by saying that "everyone is replaceable'' _ causing consternation in the All Blacks' camp.
Mr McCully would not take a side in the argument, saying he did not want it to distract from the Rugby World Cup.
"There have been statements made on both sides which I would rather not have seen at this stage of a tournament that is running extremely well, and I hope it's not a discussion we will see continued.''
Mr McCully said New Zealand had shown the decision to give it the tournament was justified.
"This is not London or Paris, this is a place which offers a different rugby experience for those attending the World Cup. We don't have the glitz and the glamour, but we have the real rugby heritage where rugby followers are able to come and enjoy an environment which is unique.''
