Bulgarians are protesting Prime Minister Boiko Borisov's austerity policies, but his performances on the football pitch are held in high regard.

Borisov won Bulgaria's Footballer of the Year survey on Monday with 44 percent of the votes, ahead of Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov with 24 percent.

The 52-year-old, who became premier in 2009, also plays for Vitosha Bistritsa in the third level of Bulgarian football.

Borisov rejected the award Monday, calling it a protest vote against the dire straits of the sport in the country. He insisted the poll be annulled or the award given to the best young player.

Borisov recently faced countrywide protests against his austerity measures after he raised the retirement age and cut farmers and railway workers' wages.
