The 9yr-old New Zealand-bred gelding Able One triumphed in the $NZ3.3 million Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin yesterday.
Able One was bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan at Cambridge Stud. The son of Cape Cross and the unraced Danehill mare Gardenia originally changed hands for $190,000 at the select yearling at Karaka when bought by Te Awamutu trainer Graeme Sanders. Able One was sold nine months later as a 2yr-old for $270,000 at the Ready to Run sale. The buyer was Paul Beamish Bloodstock on behalf a client of the Hong Kong trainer John Moore.
Able One is raced by Li Fook Kwan. Able One, winner of the Champions Mile in Hong Kong in 2007 and 2010, had had his racing restricted by stress fractures.
Jimmy Choux weakened to ninth. He was given a good run close to the pace by Jonathan Riddell.
• Dunaden provided jockey Craig Williams with compensation when he won the Hong Kong Vase.
Williams missed the ride on Dunaden when the French stayer won the Melbourne Cup at his previous start. Williams was under suspension. Williams rode Dunaden to win the Geelong Cup.
Williams had Dunaden travelling kindly midfield but the horse was momentarily held up when the field straightened for the run home.
Dunaden rallied late to win.
• California Memory repeated his win of last year in the $NZ3.5 Hong Cup (2000m). California Memory, who is trained by Tony Cruz in Hong Kong, has been ridden in both his wins by Matthew Chadwick.
