Pupil outshines master

Greymouth Swimming Club coach Paul Crawford congratulates 13-year-old Ben Whitmore on writing him out of the record books yesterday. At the Hokitika Swimming Club meeting held in the Greymouth aquatic centre yesterday, Whitmore achieved a New Zealand division II qualifying time of 1.04.06 in the 100m freestyle, eclipsing Crawford’s 30-year-old West Coast record. Crawford’s time of 1.04.10 had stood since 1981, but he was not sad to see it go. “I am just so proud of Ben, he is a fine young man and has the potential to achieve great things in the pool,” he said.
