Spain have progressed to the play-offs of the Owen G Glenn Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Auckland after an 8-1 demolition of Great Britain today.
Great Britain took the lead through captain Barry Middleton from a penalty corner after 23 minutes but Spain responded a minute later and the floodgates opened, skipper Santi Freixa scoring two goals and Eduard Tubau also bagging a double.
Great Britain coach Jason Lee didn't mince his words afterwards.
"Today we were very poor. At 1-0 up we were very competitive but we let in two of the softest goals I've seen and I'm sure I could have defended them better,'' he said.
The British side's only victory of the tournament came on Saturday against Pakistan (2-1). They lost 4-1 to Australia yesterday.
Spain, who enjoyed a 4-2 win over Pakistan yesterday, will join Pool A leaders Australia in the play-offs which start on Thursday. The defending champion Australians play the winless Pakistan this afternoon.
Spain 8 (Santi Freixa 2, Eduard Tubau 2, Pau Quemada, Jorge Gabriel Dabanch, Juan Fernandez, Roc Oliva) bt Great Britain (Barry Middleton). HT 4-1.
