Peter de Villiers will be on a shortlist of candidates to coach the Springboks from 2012 despite his four-year contract expiring at the end of this year and him admitting he didn't expect to be retained.

The South African Rugby Union said today that De Villiers would still be on its list of contenders as "the incumbent'' Springboks coach.

SARU did not name anyone else in the running, but said it "will approach a shortlist of preferred candidates'' and hoped to appoint a new head coach by early 2012.

De Villiers hinted it was the end of his tenure after the Boks' quarterfinal exit at the recent World Cup, but said on his return to South Africa that he had not resigned.

SARU said De Villiers would be considered for the job again.

De Villiers took over as Springboks coach following the side's successful 2007 Rugby World Cup campaign. During his reign the side won 30 of their 48 tests, including the 2009 Tri Nations title.

The Springboks won five tests and lost six against the All Blacks under De Villiers.
