Woods sits on nine-under, two shots ahead of fellow American Nick Watney and overnight leader Jarrod Lyle.

Woods started his round with a birdie on the par four 10th hole and followed that up with back to back birdies on 13 and 14. He sunk his fourth birdie of the day on the 16th to move into the lead tied with Watney. His fifth birdie of the round on the 18th hole gave him the sole lead.

Playing partner Jason Day is three-under for the day and trails Woods by three shots.

Watney held the early lead today courtesy of an eagle on the opening hole of his round but slipped two shots behind Woods after a bogey on the 17th.

Lyle tees off later today.

Best placed New Zealander Michael Hendry, at three-under, tees off at 2.40pm NZT.
