Wrestling: Dunedin competitors dominant

Dunedin competitors dominated the New Zealand Grappling and Wrestling Association championships in Kaiapoi at the weekend.

The Combat Sports School, part of the Todd Group, claimed 17 national titles, 11 silver medals and nine bronze medals with only 15 competitors.

The club was the most successful in freestyle wrestling in every division from the 10 to 13-year-olds, 14 to 16-year-olds, juniors and seniors, as well as the junior and senior most successful club in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Jessica Todd was named "queen of the mat", judged on competitors who win in the senior division in both freestyle wrestling and grappling.

Todd, a junior freestyle wrestler, went undefeated in the junior and senior freestyle wrestling and grappling.

She was also named most scientific female grappler at the national championships, a significant achievement considering she is a freestyle wrestling specialist who had never competed in grappling before.

Kings of the mat were Scott McGregor, a freestyle wrestler from Timaru, and Sam Belkin, a Greco-Roman wrestling specialist, of Christchurch, and competitor at the last Commonwealth Games.

Combat Sports School head wrestling coach Alan Rolton and head grappling coach Caleb Steven were very pleased with the club's results.

There were more than 200 entries at the event.

The New Zealand Grappling and Wrestling Association is the newest official body for both wrestling and grappling and also the largest, having more than 45 member clubs.
