Vusi Sibanda fell seven runs short of a maiden test century but captain Brendan Taylor continued Zimbabwe's revival against New Zealand with an unbeaten half-century on day three at Queens Sports Club.
Taylor was 50 not out his fourth consecutive score of 50 or more as Zimbabwe reached 193-3 at lunch and cut New Zealand's first-innings lead to 233.
New Zealand debutantes Doug Bracewell and Dean Brownlie claimed the two wickets of the morning session in Bulawayo.
Bracewell bowled Hamilton Masakadza (22) in the second over of the day and Brownlie ended Sibanda's stay for his first international wicket.
Taylor continued his outstanding run after two centuries and a half-century in the one-dayers, hitting three fours and two sixes in his 50 from 71 balls.
