New Zealand reached 98-1 at lunch on the first day of the one-off test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club.
Martin Guptill (41 not out) and Kane Williamson (37 not out) found the gaps easily in a 58-run partnership on a good batting pitch to give the Black Caps a solid foundation after Brendon McCullum fell in the 11th over.
McCullum sought to be aggressive, hitting two early fours in his 14 from 27 balls before he edged a delivery from Kyle Jarvis onto his stumps.
Guptill stroked four fours and a six and the in-form Williamson hit three fours in a steady start for the tourists.
Jarvis had 1-19 off seven overs for Zimbabwe, which gave test debuts to three players. The Black Caps had two players Dean Brownlie and Doug Bracewell on debut.
