Cambridge reinsman David Butcher featured in the winning of two series for drivers at the weekend.
Butcher combined with Todd Mitchell, of Hamilton to win the provincial drivers championship at Invercargill yesterday when he drove Simply Genius and Arancia win. Mitchell drove Larix to win.
Butcher was the winning individual reinsman in the five-race series involving seven teams. The Butcher-Mitchell team amassed 31 points with the second team, Auckland (Zac Butcher and Brent Mangos) on 23. Butcher led the individuals with 21 points, ahead of Jonny Cox (17).
The previous day at Oamaru, Butcher and his brother, Philip teamed to win a series for brother reinsman. They have now won the three runnings of the series staged by the Oamaru Harness Racing Club.
The Butchers did not drive a winner in the five-race series on Saturday, but amassed 87 points and prevailed by one point over John and Dexter Dunn with Matthew and Nathan Williamson on 85 points.
Dexter Dunn drove State of Affairs and Talkmeintoit to win races in the series and John won with The Friendlyassassin.
David Butcher drove Waihemo Caesar to win at Oamaru. His two wins yesterday, took his tally to eight wins on four different tracks in six days.
He teamed with Peter Ferguson to win the provincial drivers championship in 1992, 2003 and 07. Ferguson was forced to miss the series this year after he severely dislocated his thumb. A horse he was driving in work bolted and unseated him on October 19.
"I still have wires holding my thumb in place and expect to have them removed on November 29. I should be back driving soon after," Ferguson said.
Butcher has moved to second in the NZ premiership with 32 wins. Dexter Dunn is in the lead with 50.
Danny Blakemore and Glennis Ryan, representing Auckland,won an series for amateur drivers yesterday. Four teams competed. Blakemore was the leading individual driver.
