Kiwi triathlete Andrea Hewitt has stormed to victory in the women's race of the ITU Auckland Triathlon.

29-year-old Hewitt finished nearly a minute ahead of her nearest rival, winning the race in 2 hours 14 minutes.

She came out of the water in the leading pack before powering ahead on the bike leg and then managed to pull away from the pack in the 10 kilometre run.

Japanese duo Tomoko Sakimoto finished second (2:15:09) and Mariko Adachi (2:15:23) was third to finish the podium.

The men's race gets underway at 3pm with Kris Gemmell, Bevan Docherty and Ryan Sissons the main kiwi hopes.
