Bay of Plenty resident Woods will challenge previous winners Blair Stewart in the open men’s division and Adam Grimson in the under-20 class.
The venue will be decided at the Stock Route at 7.30am on the day of competition and entries are still being taken.
The fields in the open men and u20 men are strong and should provide entertaining surfing.
Grimson will also be defending his title in the u16s from Jules Craft, Duncan Milne and Sunny Brown.
Christchurch visitor Harrison Whiteside returns, aiming to better his second placing in the first club’s competition. He will compete in the u14 and u16 divisions, while Jack Wilson (also from Christchurch) will contest the u14 class.
They will be challenged by Scholastics Team member Jack Virtue and the girl-power of team-mates Jasmine Smith and Dayna Story.
Newcomers in the u12s, Jake Trafford and Aroha Moa, will challenge previous winner Reuben Mottart, while nine-year-old Jacob Scammel is the youngest competitor.
Longboard ratings leader Sean Hovell is up against youngsters Sunny Brown and Te Aorangi Pearless, with Tim Renouf and Gary Quinn also keen to challenge.
Entries are slower in the more exclusive age-groups, with Nick Chapman and James Fowell wondering if they have scared off the opposition in the seniors, likewise Warwick Thompson and Gary Quinn are the only entrants in the 45yrs-plus age-group.
Conditions look promising for the weekend, with clean two-foot waves expected on Saturday and a suggestion it will drop for Sunday.
Every surfer is guaranteed three surfs. Open women, open men and u20 men will vie for prizemoney, with spot-prizes also being drawn.
Club members earn rating points, and the events are also open to non-club members. The third event in the series is scheduled for November 26 and 27, followed by prizegiving.
