Here's how to start a training career.

Saturday's A$1.5 million ($2 million) Victoria Derby winner Sangster was Natalie Young's first victory as a trainer.

Yes, her first, in a game that trainers spend a lifetime waiting for their first stakes winner.

The former Singapore track rider and raceday photographer is an official training partner with her fiancee, Trent Busuttin.

She was granted her licence in the final week of August, a week after Sangster won his last race before Saturday at Warwick Farm.

"We haven't had a winner together at home yet, so this is the first."

Young is a Waikato girl who went to Singapore for 10 years, working as a trackwork rider and raceday finish photographer.

"I met Trent there and we've been partners for quite a while."

For Busuttin the victory thrill was somewhat dissipated by the fact Kiwi jockey James McDonald took the Sangster camp before the Melbourne stewards because of an alleged broken contract for him to ride Sangster in the Derby.
