More than 80 per cent of New Zealanders think that the All Blacks will win the Rugby World Cup tonight, while the betting odds are also heavily in the Kiwi team's favour.
A Horizon research poll released today reveals that 83 per cent are backing the All Blacks to win tonight and secure the William Webb Ellis trophy for the first time in 24 years.
That confidence is backed by the odds offered by the TAB - the All Blacks are paying $1.09 to win, while a French win would pay out $6.50.
The odds are better for the all Blacks to win by more than 31 points than for a French win, with a $4 pay-out for such a blow-out.
The Horizon poll of 1962 adult Kiwis found that 57 per cent of the country is planning to watch the game on television, while up to 112,000 rugby fans could descend on Auckland's waterfront venues.
The weather will still have a major part to play in festivities - while the poll suggests 47,400 people will go downtown regardless of the weather, another 32,700 say they'll go if it is fine - and another 103,300 say they "might" attend if it's fine.
Others will be content with the company of good friends: Among those planning to watch a live broadcast, about 16 per cent will watch at friends' homes while about 7 per cent will watch at bars and 2.7 per cent at rugby clubs.
The survey also revealed that two-thirds of Kiwis thought the event was worthwhile, with 66.6 per cent of adult New Zealanders thinking the country should bid to host another Rugby World Cup.
About 73 per cent think the investment in the cup has been of value: 26.7 per cent say it has been very worthwhile, 25.7 per cent worthwhile and 20.8 per cent somewhat worthwhile. 18.9 per cent don't think it's been worthwhile, while 6.8 per cent say they don't know.
Among Auckland ratepayers, whose council has committed the most of any local body to the event, 74.1 per cent think the investment has been worthwhile.
