The inaugural Wanaka 10-hour mountain bike race at the Deans Bank track near Albert Town on Sunday has been hailed a great success by its organiser, Bike Wanaka president Mark Gould.
"People enjoyed the course. It was very scenic, about 10.5km. There were no injuries and everybody really had a good time," Gould said.
"The punters were happy so that's what it's all about, really."
The event attracted about 280 competitors - 40 individuals and 65 teams. It was based at the Albert Town camping ground and entrants rode as many laps of the Deans Bank course as they could over the 10-hour period.
Mark Williams of Queenstown was the overall individual men's champion, narrowly beating Marty MacDonald, also of Queenstown. Wanaka woman Floortje Draisma won thewomen's individual title.
Gould was "very happy" with the with how the first 10-hour event had been received and said he expected it would continue to grow in popularity.
"I think we'll probably double our numbers next year."
The event was part of the Wanakafest programme of activities and replaced Bike Wanaka's urban downhill race of previous spring festivals.
