Motorsport: Speedway gearing up in Cromwell

The noise, the dust, and the smell of racing fuel return to Cromwell tomorrow night with the season opening at Central Motor Speedway.

Central Motor Speedway president Derek Wardell said while the first event for the 2011-12 season would be a "relatively small affair", it promised to be an action-packed event the whole family could enjoy.

"Families can go and watch the cars tear round our dirt track, which has great spectator viewing. There's noise, plenty of dust and speed and the smell of racing fuel," Wardell said.

"It's pretty special, especially for people who haven't been to anything like this before."

The 24-race programme will feature action from about 20 of the district's drivers on New Zealand's second-longest track.

There will be races for two grades of saloons, as well as youth ministocks.

In ministock races, 12 to 16-year-olds race purpose-built cars but without the "crash and bang" of their older counterparts competing in streetstock races.

Wardell said a highlight of this season's 14-meet schedule would be the Sprint Car Rockfest being held on December 29.

The programme would showcase "fast" sprint car racing and end with a two-hour concert featuring Kiwi rocker Jordan Luck.

"It's a new concept for us. Four of our members recently spent some time racing in the United States and saw how successful that sort of format could be.

"Basically, it's just another incentive for people to come and enjoy the thrill of speedway but also enjoy some music at the same time," Wardell said.

Racing tomorrow night starts at 6pm.
