Not a chance if her 2011 form continues into the Billabong Azores Islands Pro — the final 6-star event of the year — which started today on the island of Sao Miguel.
Mason needs to finish in the top six on the women’s world rankings to earn promotion to the 2012 Women’s World Tour.
Her confidence will have no doubt been boosted by the news she has been given a wildcard into the Association of Surfing Professionals Junior World Championships — a three-contest series featuring two surfers from each of the six world regions.
Mason will be representing Australasia against the best from North America, South America, Japan, Europe and South Africa.
They will compete in contests in Indonesia (starting on October 3), Brazil (October 24) and Australia (early January 2012).
The winner will be crowned alongside the 2011 ASP men’s and women’s world tour champions at an awards banquet in February.
First things first. Mason is targeting at least a quarterfinal finish in the Azores Islands Pro to confirm her 2012 tour place.
Fellow Gisborne surfers Jay Quinn and Richard Christie are also competing in the Azores in the $320,000 men’s prime contest.
