Hawke’s Bay brought up their under-11 boys’ and girls’ rep sides to play their Gisborne counterparts at Childers Road Reserve.
The under-11 representative teams play nine-a-side football on a smaller-sized pitch and have two even teams to each squad, so that the coaches train 22 players.
The local boys’ sides — trained by Darren Larkins and assistant Chris Pickens — performed very well against a strong Hawke’s Bay squad.
Football development officer Blake Mulrooney said the highlight of the boys’ play was some of the football that both squads played and the sportsmanship from the teams and parents.
Players to shine were hat-trick hero Alex Larkins and squad captain and midfield maestro Andrew (Brotty) Brott, along with numerous others.
The girls’ squad — coached by Phil Robinson and managed by Rochelle Stevens — had a great first outing and picked up several good wins.
Te Mai Ora Olsen-Baker and Raven Mackey-Stevens were the stand-outs of a very strong and competitive girls’ squad.
Thanks must go to the referees who turned up and contributed to a good footballing spectacle.
