France has risen to third place in the world rankings after qualifying for Sunday's final of the Rugby World Cup, pushing deposed world champion South Africa back to fourth place.
France's progress through the quarterfinals, where they beat England, and semifinals, where they beat Wales, has caused its ranking to rise from eighth to fifth, then fifth to third behind New Zealand and their beaten semifinal opponents, Australia. The French last broke into the top four for a week in June 2010.
In other ranking changes, England have moved ahead of Wales into fifth place, despite being eliminated by France in the quarterfinals, while Wales reached the semifinals and will play Australia in the World Cup third-fourth playoff on Friday.
