Football: Waitakere United set the pace

Waitakere United started their defence of the ASB Premiership crown with a commanding 3-0 win over Hawke's Bay United in West Auckland today.

Goals to Jake Butler, Allan Pearce and Roy Krishna settled the argument for Waitakere, although Pearce and Krishna's strikes came in the final 15 minutes after Hawke's Bay put up a strong fight.

Four yellow cards were dished out at a windy Fred Taylor Park as Hawke's Bay looked to carry their strong pre-season form of three wins in to the competition proper.

Waitakere though are stacked with talent and could boast a former All White on their bench in the form of Aaron Scott.

Butler opened the scoring just before half-time after he latched on to a cross from Pearce and it was Pearce himself who doubled the advantage in the 79th minute.

His spot kick was saved by Hawke's Bay goalkeeper Richard Gillespie, but Pearce followed up the rebound and converted the scraps in to a goal.

Krishna completed the scoring when he took advantage of some sharp work from youngster Sean Lovemore.

In tomorrow's fixtures, Manawatu host Canterbury, Auckland travel down to meet Waikato and Wellington head south to meet Otago.

Meanwhile, in week two of the national women's league, Capital Football registered a booming 5-nil win over Central and Mainland Football beat Football South 4-2 in the Southern Conference.

The Northern conference teams play tomorrow.
