60,000 to pack stadium in Wales for semifinal

A crowd of 60,000 will gather to cheer on Wales in their World Cup semifinal against France tomorrow. But they won't be at Eden Park - they'll be at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, almost 20,000km away.

The final ticket for the free screening went an hour before the offer closed yesterday, The Daily Mail reported.

Millennium Stadium manager Gerry Toms floated the idea of free admission before Wales had beaten Ireland.

They printed 20,000, which went within 24 hours. Another 15,000 went the next day and the final 20,000 yesterday.

"We've now topped 60,000,'' Toms told the paper.

"The response has been absolutely overwhelming. The lads in the team will not believe what they are going to see.''

The Daily Mail said the Welsh team was in a "bubble'' in New Zealand and had no idea how their performances had affected their homeland.

But if everything goes to plan, pictures from the Millennium Stadium will be beamed into the Wales dressing room during the final moments before kickoff.

There has already been one call for the day after the final to be declared a national holiday, the paper said.

"It's not a case of if we win the World Cup,'' one caller told Radio Wales. "It's when we win the World Cup.''
